Do I need planning permission for a Loft Conversion?

Most loft conversions do not need planning permission as they are considered to be permitted developments.

Some examples that do are:

  • You live in a conservation area
  • Your house has already been extended to its limit of 15% of the original size
  • The loft conversion will make more than two habitable rooms
  • The loft conversion will change the appearance of the outside of the house
  • The volume of the extended roof exceeds 40 cubic metres for a terrace or 50 cubic metres for a semi detached or detached house.
  • The new room constitute a change of use such as a new office
